“弱者,你的名字是女人。”这句话几乎可以适用于父系社会开始后产生的一切中国古代爱情文学作品。早在《诗经》中就有叙事诗《谷风》《氓》,刻画专情、温顺、勤勉而被弃的女子;《上山采蘼芜》写“新人从阁人,故人从阎去”的悲伤;《井底引银瓶》述“终知君家不可住,其奈出门无去处”的凄凉;《会真记》里张生始乱终弃,《蔡伯喈》中蔡郎厌弃糟糠。这些可怜的女主人公,都是品尝了爱情的甜蜜与希望后又被残酷的现实粉碎了人生的梦想。在巨大的痛苦与不幸加诸生命的时候,她们没有仇恨,甚至没有过激的言语,只是在看似平淡的述说中婉转流露出后悔、自怜和对负心人的不满。
