Beijing time At 13:19 on December 28, 2005, the first experimental satellite “GIOVE-A” of the European Galileo Global Positioning System was launched at the Baikonur Space Center in Kazakhstan by means of a Russian “alliance” launch vehicle. It marks a crucial step toward the EU’s efforts to catch up with and exceed the U.S. global satellite positioning system. The experimental satellite, weighing 600 kilos, was manufactured by Surrey Satellite Technologies, UK and is the first of two experimental satellites in the Galileo system. The second experimental satellite “GIOVE-B” is expected to be launched by the Russian “Union” in March 2006. The two experimental satellites are mainly used to test the frequency of communications given by the ITU to the Galileo system and to test techniques such as dedicated Galileo navigation signals on orbit, although they are not included in the plan’s 30
