Miguel de Unamuno, a famous Spanish writer, thinker and philosopher, is one of the foremost writers and prominent representatives of the 98 generation. As an important figure of Spanish literature in the 20th century, Unamuno deeply worries about the social reality in Spain, created his life with untiring creativity, uncovered social problems and created a large number of outstanding literary works. In Unamuno’s work, philosophical thinking of human nature and the existence of humanity has always been one of his major themes and has had a huge impact on other writers and existential philosophers. The novel Mist, published in 1914, is one of Unamuno’s masterpieces. In this work, the author presents not only a brand new and multi-level narrative style, but also a huge space for readers to interpret. In addition, the human existence, religious and philosophical issues also play an important role in the novel. Therefore, this essay explores the survival and author’s puzzled attitude through in-depth analysis of the novel, and with the Argentine literature master Borch Sri Lanka’s short story “ring ruins” to be compared.
