In the ancient time, the less developed traffic kept the Hainan Island from mainland China. It was a desolate place and many criminals were exiled there. It was also a place where disgraced government officials were demoted to.
In 1097, the famous poet Su Shi was demoted to the Hainan Island. Many people there, especially the scholars and students, came here to learn from him. Among them there was a young man named Jiang Tangzuo, who was gentle, smart and diligent. Su Shi appreciated him very much and encouraged him to take part in the imperial exam. He gave Jiang Tangzuo two verses, which meant that “Hainan is a remote place but it is still connected to central China. Though you are wearing a white robe (civvies for young student who had not passed the imperial exam) now, I believe that you can pass the exam and get the chance to work for the country in the future”. Su Shi did not finish the poem. He told Jiang Tangzuo: “Today I only wrote these two verses. After you pass the imperial exam, I will finish the whole poem.”
Six years later, Jiang Tangzuo indeed passed the imperial exam. Later when he passed Xuchang, he took the two verses to Su Shi, only finding that Su Shi passed away two years ago. Su Shi’s younger brother Su Zhe finished the poet on behalf of his brother, showing the applause to Jiang Tangzuo and the yearning for Su Shi.
The phrase “Po Tian Huang” was seen in Su Shi’s poem, containing the meaning of unprecedented things.
