Part of the abrasion of the grinding media in the ball mill is due to corrosion. This study indicates that it is possible to prevent and reduce the corrosion that occurs during the grinding process with commonly used preservatives, thereby reducing ball wear. Pulverized nickel-copper sulphide ore (60% solids) was ground with steel balls in a laboratory ball mill. The wear was determined on the basis of the weight loss during the test with or without sodium nitrite, sodium chromate, sodium metasilicate, sodium benzoate and borax preservatives. Adding the first three agents reduced wear by 49%, 46% and 44%, respectively, while the remaining two preservatives did not reduce wear. For effective preservatives, there is a limit concentration below which significant reductions in the effects occur, with less variation above this concentration. Sodium nitrite to prevent wear when the original pulp pH to more than 9, less than 9 is invalid.
