Meridian is a semi-autobiographical novel published by famous writer Alice Walker in 1976. The story of the novel is based on the American civil rights movement in the 1960s. This article attempts to analyze “Meridian” from the perspectives of “Newtonism” and “Containment” in New Historicism, exploring the different responses of the characters to the ideological dominance of the time and the doomed compromise.
