In 2011, the global use of fibers for textiles increased by 1% to 88 million tonnes. The use of chemical fibers increased by 1% to 55 million tons, accounting for 62% of the total amount of fiber used, and the application of chemical fibers in the garment and industrial sectors increased. The use of cotton decreased by 2% to 27 million t, accounting for 30% of the total fiber consumption. The use of cotton fibers in clothing has declined, but the amount used in home textiles has increased. In addition, the use of plant fibers other than cotton is about 5 million tons, accounting for 6% of the total fiber consumption, of which industrial use dominates and flax is mainly used for hemp fabrics. Wool usage is about 1.2 million tons, accounting for 1% of fiber usage.
