一种用玻璃纤维增强塑料制造的四汽缸、四冲程汽车发动机已在英国福特汽车有限公司研制成功。该种发动机用Shell Epon9400—9500环氧树脂,Vetrotex Unifilo U720—450连续玻璃纤维毡和10%热塑性粘合剂制成。玻璃纤维增强塑料发动机能满足金属汽车发动机的各种要求,即汽车发动机燃烧室温度达2000℃、废气850℃、润滑剂150℃、冷却液130℃、机壳有时150℃,而在寒冷气候下为-40℃。机械应力高,并且能耐油、水、乙二醇、汽油(或柴油)、刹车油和盐溶液的侵蚀,在行驶16万公里的情况下也不会损坏。
