我的画展在万隆开幕前夕,应印尼画家赫伊先生之邀,在他的工作室进行了令人难忘的交谈。 赫:我知道先生的名字已多年,但见到您这么多原作是第一次,它们使我激动不已。如果您不拒绝,我想向您提几个问题。首先是:中国艺术讲“喻意象征”,而您的作品“喻意象征”意味很浓,您在理解和运用这一美学体系时,是怎样赋予它以现代精神的? 周:您提了一个很核心的问题。“喻意象征”是中国艺术传统的神髓。每个民族的艺术,都是本民族心灵的对应物,也是这个民族的整体心理结构和精神力量的象征。而“喻意象征”恰好是中华民族艺术的特征。不过,我要回答的不是对于这一传统的简单继承和延续,而是立足于对它的开拓,重点是研究对这一传统的现代建构,唤起主体意识的自觉和创造意识的惊醒,以强有力的态势推进
