Did you ever get the feeling your dog was laughing at you? New research suggests maybe he was! Dogs make ?)huffing?noises scientists think is doggie laughter. Dogs make that noise when inviting another animal ?or a person ?to play. They also make it when 2)tossing a toy around by themselves.
Psychologist Patricia Simonet first 3)identified the sound. She recorded various dog sounds on a special machine. The dog laughs seemed different. When she played the sounds back to other dogs, they also reacted differently.
Some pups acted afraid when they heard 4)growls, 5)whines, or barks. But, says Simonet, I’ll the dogs responded 6)positively to the laugh.?They began to play. 7)Gorillas, 8)chimps and rats are also known to laugh. Does laughter mean sense of humor? No one knows for sure yet, but researchers are working to answer the question. Check out these six stories and decide for yourself if the animals?9)antics mean they find things funny!

Bongo Marie, an African parrot, didn’t get along with Paco, another parrot. Hhe was always 16)picking on Paco,?says Sally Blanchard, a parrot behavior expert from Loveland, Colorado.
One night Blanchard was cooking dinner. Pulling a small hen out of the oven, she set the steaming bird on the kitchen counter to carve. Curious, Bongo Marie moved in for a closer look. “Oh, no. Paco!”the parrot 17)shrieked, tossing her head and laughing like a 18)maniac.
“That’s not Paco,?said Blanchard, laughing herself. She showed Bongo Marie that Paco was in the next room. “Oh...no,?repeated Bongo Marie, this time sounding disappointed. “I’m 19)convinced she knew it was funny,?says Blanchard. The parrot then seemed to laugh at her own joke.

Tulip, a rat, loved to play. Given the run of the house, she would 20)scurry over to young Jaak Panksepp to play as soon as he came home from school. Today, Panksepp is a scientist who studies animal emotions and welfare at Washington State University in Pullman. He’s made a surprising discovery.
Rats 21)chirp when they play or look forward to playing. The chirps are too high-pitched for humans to hear. Panksepp heard the rats?sounds with equipment that 22)detects and records the presence of bats, which also make high-pitched sounds.
After playing back the tapes, he wondered, “What if this stuff is laughter?”He 23)tickled some rats with his hand. The bat detector went crazy. The rats were laughing! While he can’t prove rats have a sense of humor, he says, “For rats, laughter is the way they express joy.”

Do great apes have a sense of humor? “Definitely,?says Rob Shumaker, a scientist at the Great Ape Trust in Des Moines, Iowa. ”
At a zoo where he used to work, Shumaker was 24)hosing down the 25)orangutan enclosure. It was a hot day. Junior, an adult male, begged for a drink. The ape was sitting on a platform higher than Shumaker’s hose could reach, so he 26)flicked him some drops. Delighted, Junior laughed out loud. A long, playful water fight followed.
When Shumaker finally ended the game, Junior appeared to settle down. He actually was 27)biding his time. A huge puddle of water had collected on the platform. Shumaker walked over to say good-bye to Junior, and the laughing ape made one sweep of his arm, 28)drenching Shumaker. “He totally got me!”

Ambika is like that 29)annoying practical joker who offers to shake hands and then 30)zaps you with a hand buzzer. Except Ambika is a 57-year-old elephant!
A 31)resident of the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., Ambika used to be fed next to a younger elephant named Shanthi. Both received a daily 32)ration of apples, carrots, and sweet potatoes.
“One day Ambika pushed her apples over to Shanthi,”says Marie Galloway, the zoo’s elephant manager. A friendly gesture, right? Shanthi thought so. She took the apples and gave Ambika her carrots. Little did Shanthi know that Ambika’s motives were not so pure.
By trading a few times, Ambika 33)lulled Shanthi into trusting her. One morning the 34)unsuspecting Shanthi reached for the apples and...ha! Ambika kicked her! Shanthi wasn’t hurt, but the joke was on her. “Ambika set her up,?says Galloway.“If f an elephant can have a sense of humor, Ambika has one.?

Flashing a big, toothy 35)grin and making a huffing sound, Buffy the dog 36)waggles her 37)hind end. She stares at her owner Jean Donaldson.
Donaldson is sitting on the floor doing her yoga exercises. She stays very still while twisted like a 38)pretzel. 39)Teetering on one shoulder is a green rubber spider. A 40)weasel 41)squeak toy and two stuffed animals stand at attention on her crossed legs. “Buffy arranges her toys on me every time I do yoga,?says Donaldson. Sometimes they fall off. When they do, Buffy never 42)hesitates. She 43)pounces, grabs the fallen toy with her teeth, and carefully places it back on Donaldson’s body.
“She thinks it’s 44)hilarious,”says Donaldson. “if Buffy were a person, she’s probably draw a mustache on my picture.”
