陆羽(733-804)作为世界第一部茶学专著《茶经》的作者,他的伟大功绩不仅在于总结了前人的茶学经验,而且更主要地在于把中国文化的精神注入到茶事之中,在于他把饮茶从生活提升到文化的高度,正如同时代人封演在其所著的《封氏见闻记》中所描述的:“因鸿渐之论,广润色之,于是茶道大兴。”随着茶文化热的兴起,对于陆羽及其《茶经》的研究也逐渐深入起来。湖州作为陆羽的第二故乡,茶文化的发源地,如何加强对陆羽的研究,不仅涉及到茶文化的学术研讨,而且对于加强地方文化研究、促进中外交流,都是十分有益的。
