From April 23 to May 6, solo exhibition of "Nature of Light, Inspiration of Hungary" by the Hungarian contemporary artist Zoltan Viczan was unfolded at Chongqing VA Gallery. Co-sponsored by the Consulate General of Hungary in Chongqing and Hong Kong VA Gallery, the exhibition showed nearly 40 glass artworks and paintings by Zoltan Viczan.
Hungarian Ambassador to China Máté Pesti attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition and introduced that given the rich historical and cultural heritages of Hungary, with the efforts of the Hungarian Consulate General in Chongqing, the Hungarian Cultural Festival has been continuously held in Western China to promote Hungarian culture and art. This time, a pearl of modern and contemporary Hungarian art has been presented to the Chinese public. Zoltan Viczan is a renowned Hungarian glass artist. His works are a genuine embodiment of Hungarian traditional culture, manifesting his respect and love for nature, and interpreting the unique influence of Asian culture on the works from a modern perspective. Ambassador Máté Pesti said that he was delighted to exhibit contemporary art works from Hungary in a modern, prosperous and humanistic city like Chongqing, and to enhance cultural and artistic exchanges between China and Hungary.
"I am very pleased to represent my motherland and exhibit my works in the beautiful mountainous city of Chongqing. I feel very lucky as an artist as I can turn my inspiration and skills into fasicnating works of art and introduce them to friends in China. According to Zoltan Viczan , this exhibition brings a series of art works represented by "Nature of Light", as well as other different themes like digital art. The works cover Hungary's maps, beehives, clouds, animals, etc., and were all created in China. Among them, "Nature of Light" demonstrates the attributes of light. Viewing from different angles, one can see the effect of continuous reflection of light. Zoltan Viczan said that he prefers to start from small creations with focus on details. In his animal series of sculptures, all animals are displayed on glass with a diameter of merely 8 cm in a lifelike manner, and even the blood vessels and hairs of the animals are clearly visible.
Zoltan Viczan has continuously made breakthroughs in his recent creations, and improved both his skills and creativity. He tried to paint in the form of sculpture, developed from abstract painting to concrete painting and then to digital art, presenting his works in the form of new media. In Zoltan Viczan's view, the century-old inherited skills need to be carried on and enriched with creativity.
It is worth mentioning that Zoltan Viczan's works gradually involved more innovative elements. Having tried to use projection to display his works, he casts a small crystal ball on the wall with light, and the carving details can be explicitly seen. According to Zoltan Viczan, sometimes it is difficult to show the audience tiny sculptures, yet projection is an excellent way. When the crystal ball turns to present different artistic effects, the viewer can engage and interact with it.
"Zoltan Viczan devotes his overflowing emotions into the creation of art works, especially his unique insights in the field of glass art, highlighting Hungary's unique art form in the field of contemporary art." Said exhibition curator, Hong Kong VA Gallery chief executive Vincent L.J. Deng. It is reported that in the past 10 years, Hong Kong VA Gallery has maintained close partnership with the Hungarian Consulate General in Chongqing. Since the beginning of this year, five Hungarian cultural exchange events have been held in the Chengdu-Chongqing area.
