The Red Sorghum Family was an early work by Mo Yan, a contemporary Chinese writer, originally published in 1987. The text adapted from 1988 won the Gold Bear at the 38th Berlin Film Festival, until the original text was known. Later, the novel was translated into English by the famous sinologist Ge Haowen in 1993. The English version of “Red Sorghum” has long been considered a work of readability and loyalty. However, comparing the original text with the translation, we still found obvious traces of rewriting in the translation process. This article will make a contrastive analysis of the original text and the translated text, and use the ideological manipulation factors in Lefevere’s rewriting theory, which is one of the representatives of translation manipulation school, to analyze the deep-seated reasons of the rewriting phenomenon.
