Does administrative power affect the allocation of academic resources? This paper analyzes the results of the national excellent Ph.D. dissertations from 2003 to 2010 and finds that tutors holding executive positions in colleges and universities have an important influence on the distribution of academic resources. Specifically: In the 100 excellent selection, although the academic ability of students have a significant effect on the award, but also for the award of executive power is also helpful. Moreover, the supervisor’s administrative power has affected the trade-off of students’ academic abilities in the selection mechanism. In other words, the higher the tutor’s administrative power, the lower the correlation between the student’s academic ability and the probability of obtaining the best thesis, which is more obvious in the discipline of “official taste”. To some extent, this shows that the platform for the distribution of academic resources has become, in a certain degree, an arena of power struggle.
