ATM stands for English Asynchronous Transfer Mode, which is a high-speed, connection-oriented switching and multiplexing technology. It uses a 53-byte cell (where 5 bytes is the header and 48 bytes is the payload) to deliver different types of traffic at the same time: voice, video, and data. It uses asynchronous transmission, the flow of information can be transmitted independently without the need for a common clock. ATM is logically divided into three layers: user layer, management layer and control layer. User layers include inter-user protocol interfaces such as IP or SMDS (multi-megabit data services) and ATM; management layers include the ATM stack; control layers include signaling and setup and tear down of virtual circuits.
