Most solid tumors have hypoxia microenvironment due to the continuous expansion of cell number and oxygen consumption. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) is a hypoxia response regulator widely found in mammals in early 90s. Recent studies have shown that many tumors express HIF-1 highly and are closely related to tumor growth, angiogenesis, invasion and metastasis. This review summarizes recent studies on HIF-1α and brain tumors.
