In the upper ocean, there are diverse interactions between the field of ultraviolet (UV) and visible radiation and its various forms of life including zooplankton, phytoplankton,or bacterioplankton. Moreover, the fact that shortwave radiation is efficient for photosensitizing dissolved organic compounds opens the door to all sorts of photochemical processes. The photobiological and photochemical processes are often intertwined in complex ways, and it is important to consider the various processes in an integrated way. This work is centered on a model representing the spectrum of UV and visible radiation at the ocean surface and its propagation through the water column. The atmospheric model takes into account dependences on clouds, aerosols and gases, particularly ozone.
