The prevalence of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) has increased significantly in most Caucasian populations in recent decades.Both genetic and environmental risk factors are involved in the development of CMM.We conducted number of association studies for cutaneous melanoma on multiple genetic loci in a case-control study.We demonstrated that single nucleotide polymorphisms (rs 12913832) within the intron 86 of HERC2 is significantly associated with eye color, but not cutaneous melanoma.We found that common variants in Syntaxin 17 gene which was identified as a melanoma susceptibility locus in horses was not associated with human melanoma.Our replication study was successful shown a new melanoma risk locus on chromosome 20q11, with evidence for stronger association in early-onset cases.Further study on these melanoma susceptibility loci to identify causal gene/variants is required.
