Biopolymers possessing antifungal, antibacterial or antiviral activity are based on the release of an active agent conjugated to the polymer chain or on polymeric structures with inherent activity.Polymers releasing active bromine or iodine or an anti-fungal agent are examples of the first class of polymers while polymers possessing quaternary ammonium groups usually present antimicrobial activity.Iodine and bromine releasing polymers were prepared by either complexation of the halogen onto polyurethane or polyamides or chemically bound into an N-haloamine moiety.
