IYGU,or International Year of Global Understanding,is an international year initiated by IGU and developed under the leadership of Benno Werlen,a German cultural geographer. It is intended to bridge the gap in awareness between local actions and global effects in facing global problems, and to support Future Earth, which is the new grand international research/education framework for sustainability,by mobilizing bottom-up activities world-wide.The basic concept of IYGU coincides with the main theme of the IGU Kyoto Conference 2013,namely “traditional wisdom and modern knowledge for the Earth's future”.The IYGU's truly inter-disciplinary,trans-disciplinary,cross-cultural,glocal(global-local)nature is particularly relevant for Asia, where rapid societal and environmental changes are undergoing with its huge population, often challenging regional life support systems, traditional cultures and life styles, and the environments.
