Macrovascular disease, such as coronary artery disease (CAD) and stroke, is the leading cause of mortality in diabetic patients, whereas microvascular disease (retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy) is not only closely related to morbidity but also the progression of atherosclerosis and dismal outcomes in diabetic patients with macrovascular complications.It is reported that diabetic patients with retinopathy are at higher risk of the development of CAD and vulnerable plaque than those without.
