  Rayleigh-type jet disintegration can be controlled by using an external disturbance such as an electrical pulse width modulated(PWM)actuation.In this study,a novel approach to manipulate the liquid jet breakup is achieved by using a dual actuation system,in which the modulated disturbance is composed of a superposition of two disturbance signals generated by two individual piezoelectric actuators installed in a liquid droplet generator.The different combinations of amplitude,frequency,and phase shift of the pulsed width modulation signals affect the corresponding breakup characteristics,such as the breakup length,drop diameters,formation of satellite drops,etc.In addition,a numerical model using the dual PWM actuation is proposed,which is validated by comparing with the experimental data with the breakup phenomenon acquired via high-speed imaging camera.Furthermore,the parameters of the numerical model are analyzed in order to understand how the two superimposed pulsed width modulation signals influence the atomization process.
