Occurrence of multiple independent cancers in a tissue of an individual is known as field cancerization.Traditionally, accumulation of mutations in the tissue was considered as its mechanism.In contrast,over the past decade, we and others demonstrated that accumulation of epigenetic alterations in normal-appearing tissues, namely formation of an epigenetic field for cancerization, is even more important [Ushijima, J Biochem Mol Biol, 40∶142, 2007;Ushijima, Clin Cancer Res, 18∶923, 2012].
