Type 2 diabetes is an increasingly prevalent metabolic disease characterised bya loss of glycaemic control. If left unmanaged further complications includechronic hyperglycaemiawhich is a major risk factor forhypertension and cardiovascular disease. This disease is commonly the result ofinsulin resistance in peripheral tissues such as skeletal muscle as well as relative insulin deficiency due to pancreaticβ-cell dysfunction.Zinc has been found to facilitate insulin signaling and aberrant zinc homeostasis has been linked to reduced insulin responsiveness and may therefore contribute to insulin resistance.
