Animal fatty acid synthase (FAS Ⅰ) is a multi-enzyme complex that catalyzes the synthesis of fatty acid.Many studies have suggested that FAS is a potential bi-target for drug discovery.First,higher levels of FAS expression have been detected in various human cancers than in normal tissues.Second,studies also showed the FAS inhibitors can trim down food intake and body weight significantly in both lean and ob/ob mice.Thus compounds that reduce FAS activity or expression level might offer therapeutic approaches in cancer and obesity treatments.
