Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) is the most common preventable cause of hospital death.VTE encompasses several manifestations of the same disease process, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).The burden of this disease is borne by hospitalised medical and surgical patients with the majority of all in-hospital deaths due to PE in nonsurgical patients. Most hospitalized patients have at least one significant or multiple risk factors for VTE, making the risk of VTE an automatic consideration for inpatients. There are pharmacological and mechanical methods to prevent VTE that are safe, effective, cost-effective, and recommended by authoritative international guidelines.
