The insulin resistant state exerts only subtle abnormalities in asymptomatic individuals, which is in contrast to the type 2 diabetic state.Furthermore, although obesity is one important risk factor for the development of insulin resistance, not all obese individuals are insulin resistant and there are also a rare number of lean insulin resistant subjects. So, the identification of insulin resistant subjects by a straightforward laboratory test is urgently needed to establish a valid and sensitive analytical procedure for the detection of this subtle metabolic derangement.
