Nanomaterials (NM) are increasingly used in various different commercial applications, which are differently regulated within the EU.EU Cosmetics Regulation EC 1223/2009 also covers NM and includes a specific labeling of cosmetics containing NM and a pre-market notification.EC 1935/2004 and EC 10/2011 regulate Food Contact Materials (FCM) and currently do not include a definition for NM nor require a labeling. An approval is necessary only in certain specific cases.Applications of NM in textiles are in general not regulated at all.Exceptions are NM with biocidic properties, which are covered by the EU biocides regulation EC 58/2012.I will first give an overview on risk assessment and regulation of NM in the EU and then focus on hazard assessment based on results from recently finished projects.
