The importance of cytokines as regulators of the immune response to infection, injury or inflammation has long been recognized. There is now a rapidly growing understanding of their importance in cancer as well.Numerous studies indicate that their functions in malignanciesare quite complex, and can serve to both support tumor growth and metastasis as well as to inhibit them.Additionally, they appear to play an integral role in cancer-associated symptoms such as cachexia, fatigue and fever.Evidence indicates that cytokine levels can be useful as prognostic markers, and inore importantly, clinical trials are investigating their usefulness as anti-cancer therapeutic agents. The routine measurement of cytokine levels in the clinical laboratory, however, can present a number of challenges which will need to be addressed in order to adequately support clinical trials.
