Background Axonal degeneration is a primary or contributory component of many neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinsons disease (PD).Recent studies have found that the chief component of the Wallerian degeneration slow (Wlds) protein is the full sequence of nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferase 1 (NMNAT1) which could delay Wallerian degeneration, and axon loss appears to precede cell body loss.In our preliminary study, we find that the Parkinsonian mimetic mice are protected by overexpression of nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferase (NMNAT1).
