Oral complications,in HIV-infected patients, including the treatment thereof, have been well described in the developed world. The ravages of the HIV-pandemic is however most evident in developing countries, particularly in the sub-Saharan region.South Africa and neighbouring countries have the highest incidence of HIV infection, while AIDS related deaths manifest in ever increasing numbers of AIDS orphans. These countries also experience an acute shortage,or lack of health care resources.Under these circumstances the role of oral health professionals go beyond the mere treatment of dental diseases. The objective of the presentation is to describe an oral health program and functions of a team of oral health professionals serving the needs of HIV/AIDS patients and orphans in a developing country.
