Recently, we developed a molecular subtyping method for breast cancer based on gene expression profiling (BMC Cancer 11;143, 2011).Six molecular subtypes with distinctive biological and clinical characteristics were identified.During the study, differential expression of immune response-related genes within certain molecular subtypes of breast cancer was noted and appeared to associate with risk of distant recurrence. This finding prompted us to further investigate how differential expression of immune response genes might affects risk of distant metastasis in different molecular subtypes of breast cancer.
