In forensic science, the comparison of samples found at the crime scene with materials in the suspect's possession is of primary importance to generate evidence.In most cases, this comparison cannot be performed by analyzing a single compound, but requires a careful inspection of a set of components (via multivariate analysis).In this context, the use of chemical fingerprinting methods is of primary interest.The success of such a method relies on the possibilityto generate a sufficiently high peak capacity to obtain fingerprints containing information on a large a set of compounds in the sample as possible.Two-dimensional chromatography opens the possibility of generating enough peak capacity for recording these highly detailed fingerprints.
