This paper aims to answer the question of mobile money being a viable option for the promotion of financial inclusion.Mobile financial services are amongst the world’s most promising mobile applications in the developing world and could potentially become a general platform that transforms entire economies,as it is adopted across commerce, health care, agriculture, and other sectors(Kevin Donovan,2012).Giving people the opportunity to store and transact money in digital form opens the doors for hundreds and millions of underserved people which is an immediate gateway to economic growth.Beyond financial inclusion, mobile money contributes to 11 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.According to a recent study by Mckinsey’s Global Institute,Digital finance, including mobile financial services, can add around US$3.7 trillion in additional annual economic activity by 2025(GSMA,2006-2016).The main objective of this paper is to determine whether Jamaica can sustain a mobile payments platform and if so,propose an ideal mobile payments platform for Jamaica,a developing country,by analyzing certain aspects of already established and successful payments platforms existing in countries that are all quite different.China,Kenya and the United States were chosen to conduct this analysis because they have some of the most well-known mobile platforms worldwide, which are all diversely different in how they deliver their service to their users.Although China and the United States have way more advanced economies than Kenya,it is important to note that each country represents a different level of innovation and development.Kenya’s economy is quite similar to that of Jamaica’s which is why it serves as a good candidate for the comparative analysis. After evaluating all three models, qualitative research was performed in order to determine the general key factors driving mobile money services. It was concluded that although certain key factors drive mobile money, the level of innovation is what determines the type of mobile payment platform implemented, which is where the use of the Bloomberg Innovation Index became useful. With the use of questionnaires and interviews to test Jamaica’s innovation level,it became clear that Jamaica’s economy can in fact sustain a mobile payments platform but this depends solely on the business model.
