According to a report of British media on October 21st, a new research points out that, nonsmokers seem to be "living in a city of fog- haze" when they live with smokers. The air quality of the place they live resembles to that of nonsmokers who live in the cities with heavy air pollution.
According to the report, the joint research report published by researchers of the University of Edinburgh and the University of Aberdeen points out that, to nonsmokers, living in a smoking-free residence is of great help to their health.
The researchers have collected statistics of 93 smoking families and 17 nonsmoking families. The result shows that the average value of PM2.5 of the 93 smoking families is ten times of that of the 17 nonsmoking families.
Researches show that if nonsmokers could move to a smoking- free residence, the PM2.5 they contact will be reduced dramatically, which is especially good for children and senior citizens.
The conclusion of the research is that, all the findings show reducing the chance that people contact secondhand smoking is of great necessity and the most effective measure is to implement the rule of forbidding indoor smoking.
Before the researchers release such result, there were evidence which proved that living in the environment of secondhand smoking for a long time would result in serious respiratory and heart diseases. So, many countries have taken measures to reduce the possibility of contacting secondhand smoking in working and relaxing places of people.
Researchers said that to reduce the harmful dust substances that are inhaled by the family, the most effective method is making the family a smoking-free area.
