There is a popular trend in Europe, the US and many other regions that to make suburban lives stay away from cars and it is part of the "Smart Planning". The Vauban Community established in 2006 is a model of this trend. Vauban is a very rich community and different from other communities in suburban areas. The largest difference is that car is prohibited in most roads of Vauban and the residents are not allowed to build carriageway and garage. Bicycles and walking are the main transportation means. Although it is not absolute "car-free", Vauban is indeed a community with much less cars. All the residents living in the Vauban Community are promoters of suburban lives. It’s rare to see cars dropping off or picking up kids at school or commuters driving to or from work, because they’ve already abandoned cars. This experimental new community is located in Freiburg. It hardly has any depot, carriageway home garage. Apart from the streetcar connecting Vauban and the downtown Freiburg, there are almost no cars on the roads of Vauban. Although there is no purchase limitation of car, the restriction level for car is very strict. For example, the number of parking space is limited and expensive -- it will cost 40, 000 dollars to buy a parking space, and the cars can only be parked in the two large garages located in the periphery of the community. It’s much closer for the residents to walk to stores in the community than to the garages. Therefore, 70% families in Vauban don't have cars, and 57% families sold their cars for moving in here. In many traditional communities, the law stipulates that residential area has to be separated with the commercial area and residents have to drive there. However, in Vauban, in order to make sure residents can live their lives without cars, all the function zones, including stores, banks and restaurants, are all in walking distance. Vauban is a long and narrow area, so the main rail transit is close to every household. Compared to other communities, the stores, restaurants, banks and schools in Vauban are more scattered, but closer to residential buildings. In some particular areas, not only cars are prohibited, bicycles are also limited. When go shopping or snow skiing, several families would share one car or rent a bus from the Vauban car-pooling club. Many people moving to Vauban is not because of the pleasant natural environment, but because that they believe a place of car-free is more favorable for the children. Kids play on the roads because there is no car, and many parents call the place Children's Playground. In such a country like Germany where the Benz and highway were born, the car-free community like Vauban is incredibly praiseworthy.
