Objective: To study the effects of passive smoking on glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) and vitamin C (vitamin C) in children. METHODS: A total of 964 children were enrolled in a cluster sampling study to screen out 20 non-smokers, 1 smokers and 2 smokers at home. In order to avoid subjective error, we nicotine metabolites cotinine as an objective indicator of how much smoke inhalation, and determination of serum glutathione peroxidase activity and urinary vitamin C content. Results: Corotinine was directly related to the amount of passive smoking. GSH-PX and VitC gradually decreased with the increase of inhaled smoke concentration (P <0.01). Conclusion: Passive smoking can lead to the decrease of GSH-PX activity and the decrease of urinary VitC content in children.
