清末,广州作为中国的南大门,是清朝重要的通商贸易港口,在西方文化的不断渗透之下,经济和文化上得风气之先,市民思想也日益开放,审美情趣也发生了改变,传统花鸟画也在不断向现代化发展,一种有别于中国传统绘画的广州外销画适时兴起。岭南地区一批具有创新精神的画家不再对主导的江南文人画跟风效仿,融入西方绘画技法和理论,迎合时代审美标准,开创独具岭南风情的绘画风格,这种变革的发端就从岭南地区的居巢居廉开始。他们突破传统文人画的一般程式,开始师造化,重写生,将视野放入日常生活中熟悉的事物,大大扩充了花鸟画的绘画题材,强调个性的表达,在他们的影响下,岭南花鸟画拉开了由古转今的序幕。
