Contemporary American homosexual theater, which dates back to the 1960s, aims to show equality, dignity and social respect for “sex”, “gender” and personal feelings and to demonstrate the anguish and aspiration of homosexuals and AIDS patients. The American angel by the American contemporary playwright Tony Kushner is a gay and lesbian drama of considerable political and religious character. It deals with the “national themes” of the contemporary American crisis of state politics and religion. The Judaist belief crisis reflected in the play is not unrelated to homosexuality, while the political significance highlighted by the playwright is undoubtedly related to the characteristics of Jewish culture in the United States.
