《曹玺传》中记述曹玺“著籍襄平”，曹玺是曹雪芹的曾祖父，据此有人认为曹雪芹祖籍即襄平，也就是今辽阳。但据史书记载，襄平、辽阳在西汉时是同属于一个郡的两个县，东汉时已不属于同一个郡管，但仍是两个县名。北魏时襄平之名仍存，而辽阳之名已废。从晋朝到北魏时，襄平已由原来的县名演变成州或治所名，而辽阳在辽代才重新建置，而此时辽阳与汉时辽阳辖区已不同。襄平之名是北齐时废的。从襄平的历史沿革来看古襄平应指今之中固、铁岭、新民、抚顺、沈阳、锦州、辽阳、唐山、丰润等地，故那种把曹雪芹的祖籍说成是辽阳的说法是不科学的 “Cao Xi Biography” describes Cao Xi “Ji Xiangping”, Cao Xi is Cao Xueqin’s great-grandfather, according to which some people think Cao Xueqin native that Xiangping, which is now Liaoyang.
