A text is distinguished from a nontext by its texture, and the texture is primarily provided by cohesion. Cohesion refers to relations of meaning that exist within the text, and that define it as a text. Halliday and Hassan (1976) distinguish five types of cohesion: substitution, ellipsis, reference, conjunction and lexical cohesion. This article tries to analyze the extract from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland from the perspective of cohesion to see how the author gives the texture successfully with cohesive devices. It first provides a brief theoretical framework of cohesion, and then gives a brief introduction to the text being analyzed, finally analyzes the text mainly from the aspects of ellipsis, reference, conjunction and lexical cohesion. According to the analysis, it can be said that the book is well-structured, perfect in cohesion and easy to understand for children, which explains why this book is so popular among the readers around the world.
