Objective To explore the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and reflux esophagitis (RE). Methods From January 2010 to January 2015, the clinical data of 353 patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease and gastroscopy undergoing gastroscopic examination in inpatients and outpatients of Department of Gastroenterology, People’s Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were randomly collected. There were 232 cases with RE manifestations under endoscopy (Study group), 121 cases without abnormal gastroscopy (control group). The height and body mass of two groups were detected and BMI was calculated. Results The mean BMI in the study group was (23.03 ± 3.84) kg / m ~ 2, and the mean BMI in the control group was (24.65 ± 4.16) kg / m2. The BMI in the study group was significantly higher than that in the control group ), RE was related to BMI, and the relationship between RE severity and BMI grade (χ ~ 2 = 49.581, P <0.05). Conclusion BMI can be used as a predictor of RE and may play a role in the prevention of RE.
