The Liangshan Yi area located in southwest Sichuan is the largest area inhabited by the Yi in China .The social life of the Yi reflected a spirit of mutual support , mutual aid and coopera-tion, as well as mutual sharing among the family clan ( jiazhi ) .However , there was both unity and conflict among various clans .The focus of the so-cial conflict existing in the Yi society was related to the people ’ s view on value and benefit , including power, wealth, and honor.Another characteristic of the Liangshan Yi was their esteem for fighting . How does the Liangshan Yi explain the interper-sonal violence in their society?The key factor was“honor”.The Liangshan Yi accepted a concept of honor which encouraged man to use violence .The Yi believed that a man who was worthy of getting respect must demonstrate his brave spirit and take physical revenge ( including Sigei [ suicide ] ) if he was insulted by others .
