Zhang Baojun wants to make the myth of “soil into gold” a reality. He is a graduate of the Ceramics Department of the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts. During his four years of study, he learned the art of “earthworking” - how to choose soil, how to draw and how to shape it. He had always dreamed of turning the earth into gold - giving the earth direct value. Zhang Baojun grew up in a poor mountainous area in Huangshui County, Hebei Province, and liked to draw and play mud for a child. He had a taste of hunger, had tried to jump out of the poor ravine. After graduating from high school, he studied painting and spearheaded for several years and was admitted to the Central Government in 1981
