This article highlights the challenges and trends in the future development of marine structures. It focuses on ways to improve the efficiency of energy-hungry ships and on the design challenges of offshore oil and gas production facilities. It also discusses the analytical tools that are most needed for the sustainable design of future ships and marine structures. Finally, It is a reflection of universities’ role in education, research and innovation in the field of marine structure. It also discusses the curriculum requirements for marine science and technology education, basic research activities and international cooperation.
