In 1982 the Italian state-run railway started a giant train ferry with three decks and capable of carrying 80 trucks between Civitavecchia and Sardinia. Due to the ferry design and the improvement of the loading equipment on the ferry, the train ferry is surpassing what it has just followed for connecting only two railway networks. It has now become an important link in the complete transport chain of the railway network. 1.
