Steinbeck’s “Chrysanthemum” portrays a female figure who is struggling in patriarchal society, longing for freedom and pursuing himself. The heroine Elisa has a stubborn, straightforward masculine side, and has the characteristics of feminine unique softness and sensitivity. These two seemingly contradictory personalities coexist and change frequently in Elisha. By analyzing the heroine’s contradictory individuality and revealing the root of its internal harmony and unity, this article explores the author’s view of feminism and explores the spiritual pursuit of women represented by Alyssa.
