The oversea copyright of Hawthorn Tree Forever, the best-selling novel of writer Amy, has been successfully authorized to 17 countries and regions including the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Netherland, Canada, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark by agency of People's Literature Press (PLP) in completely commercialized model, obtaining a prepayments of nearly US $ 200,000 since 2010.
PLP decided to develop the oversea copyright business of Hawthorn Tree Forever in the second half of 2009, when Hawthorn Tree Forever was a best-selling novel at home with first printing volumes up to 800,000. Even so, few people expected that it could be recognized by the picky well-known publishers and senior editors from Europe and the United States, then enter into the mainstream book market of Europe and the United States, and capture the oversea readers.
It was difficult to conceive that because, on the one hand, the Ministry of External Cooperation, being in charge of the work for exporting, was established less than two years at the moment. Although teachers with rich experience in copyright were taking charge, it is still in the exploring stage. On the other hand, the past experience told us that even those novels sold well at home were unlikely to be exported to the market of Europe and the United Stated successfully owing to the difference in cultural traditions and reading tastes between China and foreign countries. And even if exported, it could only be accepted by the Chinese culture circle, not to mention the European Circle.
The success of Hawthorn Tree Forever may be the convergence of right time, right place and right person, especially the favorable environment. People engaging in the career of exporting Chinese literature a few years ago may share the same feeling that it was confronted with great difficulties - with the increasing strength of various aspects of China, the international became more interested in China and hoped to get a better understanding of China through books, however, reference books, traditional culture books, practical books are more popular than literary works. But recently, the oversea interest in Chinese literature has been significantly enhanced. There were a lot of international copyright agencies beginning to focus on the works of Chinese writers, and planning to develop exporting business. It was in this context that we encounter the novel Hawthorn Tree Forever, and also get to know the American and Taiwan Copyright Agents, who paid tremendous efforts to the promotion of this novel. A bigger surprise came from the adaptation movie of director Zhang Yimou by the same name. The news that Hawthorn Tree Forever would be made a screen version by director Zhang Yimou was boarded on the major media less than six months after we signed the agency. The adaptation movie directed by international well-known director contributes a lot to the achievements nowadays in exporting Hawthorn Tree Forever.
The bottleneck for exporting Chinese literature - translation, can be overcome by applying multimedia format to promote the oversea copyrights comprehensively. Most of the copyright or edit personnel of publishing houses from Europe and the United States don't speak Chinese, so it is required to prepare an English version in advance for them to learn about the content, which is a sum of investment shouldn't be neglected. However, it is easy to bypass the difficulties in language by applying the more intuitive forms of media such as movies, TV shows, animation, and cartoons. The episode resulted from the release of the movie Hawthorn Tree Forever in Israel is a good example.
Thus, it can be seen that the copyright of literary works gradually become three-dimensional with features of multi-dimensional and comprehensive in the multimedia information age. A multiplier effect can be achieved by synchronously implementing the promotion of Plane Copyright and the publicity of movie. We are justified to expect an excellent achievements for the promotion of Hawthorn Tree Forever in the book market of more countries and regions. In the process of promoting the novel, we always adhere to the principle: seeking for equal cooperation with well-known foreign publishing houses and copyright agents, instead of pursuing the exporting quantities blindly; never exporting copyrights at low prices, but making efforts to pursue high-quality and high-efficiency, and striving to generates greater impact of literature on the local mainstream market. Because of adhering to this principle, we try to consider things in the long run and reluctantly make choices in the process for offers made by some countries.
