Translation of Chinese writers’ works is generally completed by those foreign sinologists. However, because Chinese actually belongs to less-spoken language in many countries, there are not so many sinologists.
A Beijing writer told frankly that among the Chinese writers, Mo Yan is not supreme, and it was just because the other masters were not lucky enough to get translation and introduction. This is one of the reasons why few Chinese writers have got international literary awards.
Since translation and introduction of sinologist are insufficient, why not develop local translators? Wang Mengda, Swedish teacher of German Department of Shanghai International Studies University said foreign publishers trust translation by their sinologists more while introducing Chinese literary works, sinologist’s language sense on their native language is clearly stronger than the Chinese translator. Although Ma Yueran translated poetry of Transtromer into Chinese and published in China, the Chinese translator has very little opportunity to participate in the translation of Chinese literary works.
Six years ago, Wang Mengda was transferred from Beijing Foreign Studies University to Shanghai Foreign Studies University and created Swedish teaching, her two students also left and taught at the university. Wang Mengda told reporter that for languages like Swedish with so few learners, China's schools would not make an effort to cultivate a professional translator in line with international standards. "Even well-trained, who is going to hire them?"
Wang Mengda revealed that she accepted the "Swiss-Chinese translation" task only at translation royalty of only 60 to 70 RMB per thousand words, which was fairly high in the various languages. Each month she could only translate a little, and she cannot live only with the royalty. In her view, without royalties standard that is sufficient to maintain survival, China cannot cultivate high level of local professional translator.
Thus, before the birth of China's domestic high-level translator, "the contradiction between supply and demand” of busy sinologists should continue, and it also takes time for large-scale entry of China's outstanding literary works into Westerners’ vision.
