During the First World War, the intelligence agencies at both Anglo-German countries often could decipher each other’s passwords by listening. In order to confuse each other, the two sides often used the passwords that have been confirmed to be deciphered by the other party to provide fake intelligence to each other. The password war was quiet and stressless. On May 26, 1916, Lange, a naval interpreter at the Nemunuest Intelligence Station in Germany, found an unusual telegram from a large group of British interlocutors.
